Eighth grade will be a stressful year due to all the preparation for exams and high schools in the near future. In eighth grade, we will learn facts that were never covered in the previous grades. The teachers would also be a lot stricter and scarier this year. Over the course of only one week, I’ve acquired new knowledge on several different types of subjects. In a short period of time, I’ve learned many new words and terms in both social studies and reading. The first word I learned that I never even heard of before was etymology. Etymology is the origin of a word and how that word became what it is now. Knowing the etymologies of words helps me better understand a word. I’ve read this word many times in books before. At one point, I looked up its definition but forgot it as time passed. In eighth grade, I revisited this word while “Charles” by Shirley Jackson in Ms. Bergquist’s class. I believe vain is an important word since it was used several times in NWEA and in books I read. A political term I assimilated in social studies is stump speech. Stump speeches are speeches candidates give when they run for office. I found it interesting how that term got its name. Once upon a time, television and other technology didn’t exist. Therefore, candidates that are running for office are required to travel to different places to give their speeches. In order to be seen and heard, they stood on tree stumps, which gave their speeches the term “stump speech.” To sum my paragraph up, eighth grade is going to be a difficult year with countless exams awaiting.
