Not all tricksters are the same, there is always one thing that will set them apart. Mark Twain and Gary Soto wrote great stories and both have a manipulative main character, Tom Sawyer, and Arnie Sanchez. Both authors portrayed their characters with a trickster affect. Tom Sawyer in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain and Arnie Sanchez in Born Worker by Gary Soto have similar work ethics, but they differ in what they value.

Values. This is what differs between Tom Sawyer and Arnie Sanchez. Tom values his freedom and is very free-spirited while Arnie values money and is essentially greedy and lazy. Tom is willing to act for a while by giving,"...up the brush with reluctance in This face but alacrity in his heart," (Twain,43). Here Tom acts to get his freedom even if it costs him being able to show emotion for a while. He ends up scheming to get what he values. While Arnie comes up with a business idea where his cousin does all the work and he expects to have equal pay to"...kind of, you know, supervise,"(Soto,51). Both characters from the excerpts have dire work ethics and to get what they want instead of doing the work they both are manipulative and make plans to get out of their work. Tom shows us thus when he,"... gives up the idea of trying to buy the boys. At this dark and hopeless moment, an inspiration burst upon him!"(Twain, 4) while Arnie's work ethic is,"...half of the work is finding the jobs,"(Soto, 49).
