World War 1 also known as the Great War was the “war to end all wars.” Imagine being a soldier during World War I. All you hear are bombs going off in the distance, bullets being shot, and the smell of poisonous gas.
In the movie “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which takes place in 1914 Germany during World War I, the protagonist and the narrator, Paul Bäumer just graduated from high school with his friends, who have all decided to enlist in the army after their teacher Kantorek persuaded them to join and help their country. They were so excited to enlist thinking it would only be three weeks of war, but instead it turned into three years. The film was made to show us how war was like back then and how difficult it was to survive. The major theme in this movie is the horror of war because the soldiers experience firsthand the brutality and harsh conditions. The soldiers have lived in the muddy trenches for days, sometimes weeks. The trenches were infiltrated with rats, lice, and poor sanitation which made it a perfect place for disease. As they go out to fight against the enemy, one of Paul’s friends gets shot on the leg. They took him to the hospital where they amputated his leg. There was no chance of survival for his amputee friend, Kemmerick. His health was deteriorating by the minute and when Paul called the doctor, he was already dead. The death of one his friends made it difficult to move on and keep fighting. In addition, another major theme is the effect of war on a soldier because in “All Quiet on the Western Front” Paul and his friends face a lot of trouble and pain during the war. Day by day they’re going without food and sleep, but they can’t do anything because they have to be ready to fight once the enemy starts to attack. Towards the end, Paul was the only one remaining from his class and his leader Stanislaus Katczinsky died as well from a bullet in the head. The deaths of his close ones made him a stronger person. The props that were being used was very similar to the equipment used in World War I from the weapons, uniforms, trucks, and the German style military marching. According to Historical Film Reviews, “...From the machine guns to the hand grenades to the chemical warfare, everything displayed in the movie was as it was really used on the battlefields of the western front.” The representation of World War I was greatly done and it couldn’t have been any better. In addition, the representation of World War I supports what we have been learning in class for awhile now. The equipment and background of the film relates to the information used in the textbooks. It also relates to the readings and assignments we’ve been given in class. The film gives you a glimpse of what was happening in World War
