“Finding Fish” by Antwone Quenton Fisher was published in 2001, and is a novel chronicling Antwone Fisher’s childhood to early adulthood years. He faced many trials and tribulations growing up motherless and fatherless causing him to be sucked into the system which led him to face psychological development issues down the road. Antwone Fisher was born on August 3, 1959 by Eva Mae Fisher who was imprisoned at the time of his birth, and his father was killed few months prior to his birth leaving him parentless and abandoned. Due to his mother being in prison the time of his birth, Antwone’s mother was found unfit and revoked of her prenatal rights; and he was placed into foster care with the Pickett’s. He would go into a daze and picture what his parents looked like and where they were located. This lead Antwone to sometimes go out looking for his parents like in stores thinking he would run into them, be happy they found him, and take him home. He pictured his mother to be beautiful and his father to be a sharp dresser and the coolest person ever like the guys he would meet at the barbershop. Antwone envisioned his parents so much to the point he knew what he would say to his father once they reunited. He stated, I saw us walking together, laughing. I’d say, man, it was rough out there. But now I’m home, I made it… without him saying a word I made him proud. That I was the son he always hoped for… “(Fisher, 2001, pg.31). This shows that Antwone wanted to be wanted from his father and for his father to be proud of him which leads him to not understand his autonomy and remain in fantasy world. Although, Antwone met his mother in the orphanage, she didn’t match the idea of his mother so he disregarded her as a person, and told himself that wasn’t mother. This caused Antwone to develop imitative vs. guilt stage because he’s longing for his parents approval aren’t there. Antwone then started school at Oliver Wendell Holmes School which he felt brought liberation from the Pickett’s, but with so many things going on in his life it began to follow him to school which lead him to lose focus. Unfortunately, due to lack of proper supervision by social workers, his issues with learning, school, and home went unnoticed. “ I was no longer seen as a child with promise but as a painfully shy little boy who walked with his head down, stumbled on words when called upon,” (Fisher, 2001, pg. 61). In the mist of beginning school, Antwone gains a new foster brother by the name of Keith who ends up being white. Antwone and his new foster bother get along, but things with Dwight and Keith are far from civil. However, He becomes a big brother to Keith and starts to look out for him. This is Antwone’s second time noticing the difference with the races and the special treatment Keith receives even in the Pickett
