Argumentative Essay: Maniac Magee's Return Home

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” (John 14:18) Jeffrey Magee, a young orphan boy from Bridgeport, Pennsylvania, found himself in East End, after leaving his first home. A few weeks following Maniac Magee’s arrival in the black community, Amanda Beale, a black girl, invited him to live with her family. Soon, however, East Enders were honey badgers as they began harassing both the Beales and Jeffrey in an attempt to rid their town of this little white kid. Feeling as guilty as a bloodied knife for all the torment this sweet family went through, Maniac soon skipped town, while Amanda stayed home. Following many other adventures, the orphan wound up living in the official local zoo’s buffalo pen.
Every reader of Maniac Magee acknowledges Amanda impatiently waited for Maniac to come home with her. Nevertheless, many disagree whether Jeffrey should, or should not, have returned home with Amanda. Jeffrey should have accepted Amanda’s second invitation to live with her family for the three following reasons: little Amanda showed sweet kindness, the Beales satisfied his wishes, and young Jeffrey refused the alternatives. Some say East Enders harbored complete contempt for Magee’s previous stay with the Beales. East-Enders loathed him, Jeffrey belonged elsewhere, and ultimately Amanda chased Magee away. Truthfully, the residents of East End cherished and loved the unprejudiced white boy. In other words, the blacks loved Maniac, while the whites abhorred African-Americans. Amanda’s temperament constantly alternated between irritation and kindness, they point out. Amanda acted hurtful, she was indignant, and she was quick-tempered.
