There are finds where parts of skull are actually hacked off and arm bones hacked into multiple parts. This clearly constitutes an evidence of some conflict for dominance in the region. Of course, it is impossible to determine at this time, if the fight happened between the local people and the Scandinavian group or between two rival leaders and their followers, however, it is significant indication that struggle for power and dominance took place outside the established borders of Scandinavia. There have been even attempts to link this find to the famous King Ingvar from Inglingasaga, (Heimskringla) although it is, of course, impossible to prove or disprove such hypothesis. In any case, it indicates the presence of significant military force of well-equipped men in the region.

The Ardnamurchan Viking Ship Burial consisted of a Viking ship that was 5m long and 1.5m wide. 200 rivets and fragments of mineralised wood was all that remained of the vessel. The remains of a Viking were found within the boat. The remains consisted of two teeth and two small fragments of bone. Found with the body were weapons, including a sword with a decorated hilt, an axe, a spear and a shield.
Target by Jasper Johns stands 66 x 66 in the Art Institute of Chicago (Figure 1). The large size of the painting draws the viewer in. The scale also makes it so the viewer is forced to look at the painting, it is not something that can be ignored. Johns created this piece in 1961, and it was one of many works in his Target series. Target was his last major work in this series and it ended up being the largest as well.
The Burial Rights of a Traitor Both in fiction and in present day reality, controversies regarding the treatment of enemies and traitors exist on a large scale. Whether the person betrayed his family and friends or whether she broke the king’s law, there are consequences to actions. The specific consequences differ according to an individual’s worldview and his or her position in society. Such arguments are present in an ancient Greek drama, Sophocles’ play Antigone (442 BCE), and were debated in 2013 regarding the burial of a suspected terrorist bomber, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in Boston, Massachusetts. In Antigone, the problem arises when Antigone attempts to bury her brother, Polyneices, who King Creon had declared as unworthy of burial.

Jan van Eyck made an impression with me when we covered him and class and The Portrait of a Man in a Red Turban is one of my favorites as well. I chose this one mainly because of how busy these paintings are as well as the contrast between the left and right on the right panel. The more I researched Crucifixion; The Last Judgment, the more interested I became. According to the Met Museum, the Crucifixion panel is presented as a first hand account. The left panel seems to have three different scene in one, starting from the top down.
My piece that I chose to stare at for 20 minutes was Gino Severini’s Armored Train in Action. I chose this piece to spend my time at, particularly because of the way the composition is set up so that the train looks like it’s coming right at you, and the way that the artist uses not only tone, but his brush strokes also to create depth in the painting. Severini paints very colorfully and uses lighting and shadow, and if you look closer depending how the thing he is drawing or painting bends or folds, he will keep his brush strokes in that direction to show the bend not only with color but with the strokes in the paint themselves. George Seurat’s brush strokes come a lot to mind when i see them, but more in an organized fashion. Gino Severini was born April 7th, 1883 in Cortona Italy.
The “Mona Lisa” is the best known and most visited piece of art. It is a portrait painting done by Leonardo de Vinci. The portrait is an oil painting on a white Lombardy poplar panel. The woman in the portrait is sat upright in an armchair, with her arms folded. This painting was one of the first portraits that depicted the sitter in front of an imaginary landscape.
