The Vikings were a group of Germanic sea dwellers who traded with and raided towns all across Europe out of their Scandinavian homeland. During the late 8th to 11th centuries they ruled all of Europe through their barbaric ways. Even other cultures outside of Europe saw the barbaric ways in which the Vikings acted towards the villages that they encountered. One such case of this was a Muslim Chronicler, Ibn Fadlan, recounting of the Vikings as “[T]he filthiest of God’s creatures.” While they were very savage in their actions, this very trait gave them the ability to be able to roam through and ravage an entire town fully unopposed and within a very miniscule timeframe.
One one first great Viking leaders was Rollo of Normandy. He was the first ruler of Normandy which was a section of The West Franks given to him by Charles the Simple in order to protect it from other Viking raids. Rollo expanded and protected the Territory during his rule until his death in 928. Another very well known Viking is Erik The Red or Erik Thorvaldsson. Tollund man The Tollund Man is a naturally preserved corpse found in Denmark. It was assumed that he was the victim of a recent murder however due to modern scientific research it would seem that his story would go a lot deeper than we originally thought. The Tollund Man was first discovered in the Bjældskovdal peat bog.
And since the Vikings had expert exploring skills along with their amazingly crafted boats it was very easy to sneak up unsuspecting villages.that not all the Vikings did they had very humble lifestyles back then. Beach Burial is an elegy by Kenneth Slessor, published in 1944 as a tribute to the soldiers who fought in World War 2. Beach Burial tells the story of the extreme loss of life and the crude, makeshift burials for soldiers. I believe the purpose of the poem was to appreciate the people who took the time to bury soldiers and put them at peace while also exploring the fruitless nature of war. The poem has a reflective, haunting tone and with the extensive use of poetic devices and language techniques it reflects on the futility of war and the severe loss of life. Onomatopoeia, oxymorons and metaphors have been used to support the theme that war was a grim, fruitless event in which many soldiers were killed.
Nanjing Massacre The Nanjing Massacre was a genocide involving the Chinese, the imperial Japanese troops, and a small third party made up of Americans and Europeans (“Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanjing”). It took place in Nanjing, China in 1937 (“The Rape of Nanking, 1937”). The massacre of the Chinese lasted for six weeks (“The Rape of Nanking, 1937”). The start of the genocide was most likely a step of Japan’s plan to control, as well as “revenge” (“The Rape of Nanking, 1937”). The Japanese committed many atrocities which would take Nanjing many years to recover from (“Nanjing Massacre”).
Viking long-ships were lean, speedy, lightweight ships that could easily cut through the most vicious waves that the ocean could throw at them. At the time, no other civilization had been able to achieve such an amazing naval feat, so this gave the Vikings a great advantage over medieval combat, political affairs, and even the trading industry. Since the ships were so fast, the ships were great for transportation of soldiers, or merchandise. “The Viking longboat was the key to the Vikings success in traveling.” (Legends and Chronicles, Paragraph 14).
The Vikings were very skilled craftsman who are capable of creating a variety of high quality materials and goods. When it comes to clothing, many viking archaeological sites show that they were very skilled in leather-work, textile dyeing and weaving, and sewing. Some Viking artifacts include wooden spindles, a
