Nanjing Massacre
The Nanjing Massacre was a genocide involving the Chinese, the imperial Japanese troops, and a small third party made up of Americans and Europeans (“Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanjing”). It took place in Nanjing, China in 1937 (“The Rape of Nanking, 1937”). The massacre of the Chinese lasted for six weeks (“The Rape of Nanking, 1937”). The start of the genocide was most likely a step of Japan’s plan to control, as well as “revenge” (“The Rape of Nanking, 1937”). The Japanese committed many atrocities which would take Nanjing many years to recover from (“Nanjing Massacre”).

As soon as the city fell to the Japanese, the horror began. They gathered any Chinese men they believed to be soldiers and buried them alive, set them on fire, used them for bayonet practice, or shot them down with machine guns (“Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanjing”). Women were raped and either died from the attack or were killed afterwards (“The Rape of Nanking, 1937”). The children were not spared from death (“Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanking”). An estimated amount of 250,000 to 300,000 civilians died, many of them were women and children (“Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanjing”). The Japanese government denies an actual massacre happened (“Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanjing”). They admit that some were raped and some were killed, but not on such a large scale (“Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanjing”). After the war, a remorseful Japanese officer admitted to the crimes committed in Nanjing (“Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanjing”). When he confesses Azuma Shiro is criticized by other Japanese citizens, and his confession was dismissed by authorities (“Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanjing”). Japanese textbooks contain little to no information pertaining to the Nanjing Massacre, and films about the event are shown years after their release date (“Scarred by history: The Rape of Nanjing”). Many Japanese were charged with war crimes, the Japanese commander at Nanjing, Matsui Iwane, was given a death sentence (Cook). The general was hanged on December 23 in 1948 (Cook).
