The job of a criminologist is one that is needed in today’s society with all the crimes that happen daily. A criminologist, also categorized as a sociologist, focus on the study of crime, criminality and irregular devious behaviors. They look at the causes of crimes, how to prevent them and how to control them. They tend to research and write about criminological theories which can help them to fuse together theories with practices. Becoming a criminologist requires some work and education beyond a high school level. Most times a career as a criminologist requires one to obtain a masters or doctorates degree in criminology or some other related subject. A lot of time is spent on conducting research of hypotheses, obtaining information and analyzing data. Most research is done on the computer through online databases. While analyzing the gathered information and statistics, Criminologists “look for patterns that might help in preventing crime or in making public policy more effective” (Shally-Jensen, 2014). Shally-Jensen (2014) also states that Criminologists “study crime scenes, interview criminals, victims and their families, or investigate entire communities” (p.52). Another responsibility that may be asked in this career is to testify in criminal trials as an expert witness. The Institute for Career Research (2009) also lists a variety of duties and responsibilities that include “studying policing systems, punishment and rehabilitation; pay visits to crime scenes; attend autopsies and develop psychological profiles describing the traits and experiences that characterize the individual who is likely to have committed a particular offense” (p.12). Not only are these duties carried out in this occupation but also there are skills that one must possess to be successful in this career. Onetonline lists 18 skills that are needed for this job. Some of the important ones include critical thinking, judgement and decision making, social perceptiveness and time management. Critical thinking involves “using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). Judgement and decision making is being able to weigh your costs and benefits of any decision. Social Perceptiveness is being aware of someone’s reactions to things and comprehending why they are reacting in that way. And finally time management is being able to manage your time effectively.
