Where we’re from, who we know, and how our mental makeup is, is very important in our lives. It can be the deciding factor between life in prison and a life dedicated to giving back to others. In The Other Wes Moore, The lives of two young men are examined through three distinct lenses, how the role our environment, social capital (How we get ahead by helping each other) and how our mindset can dictate who we become later on in life. Both of these young men grew up in roughly the same environment, the ghettos of Baltimore, Maryland and the Bronx, New York, respectively.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that, “envy is ignorance; imitation is suicide.” (370). John Knowles’ A Separate Peace is set during World War I at Devon School, a boarding school for boys. The book centers on Gene Forrester, a student at Devon, who could be described as an intelligent, but jealous, conformist. A Separate Peace illustrates Gene’s envy and imitation of his friend, Finny, and how it affects himself and his relationship with Finny, and also how Gene eventually finds peace.
Emerson states “envy is ignorance; limitation is suicide”(370). John Knowles writes A Separate Peace about a boy named Gene returning to an old school. (MIP-1) People in the society of the novel Fahrenheit 451 are absorbed in technology, they are so immersed in it that they are always using it and drawn to it in the novel. (SIP-A) A familiar character in the novel, Mildred, who represents the average person of society, is drawn to the technology and uses her devices constantly. (STEWE-1) Mildred is so drawn to technology that she lays in bed and listens to her earbuds all night, “And in her ears the little Seashells, the thimble radios tamped tight, and an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk and music and talk coming in, coming in on the shore of her unsleeping mind.
The Red Tent is a book by Anita Diamant where she describes life as seen through the eyes of Dinah, a daughter among eleven brothers. We see the story through the eyes of Dinah. She describes how her and her mother’s lives were considering her father had four wives. Their names were: Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilbah. “Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.” These are the words spoken by Rick Blaine as he drinks himself into a slight stupor to cope with the grand entrance of the beautiful, yet mysterious Ilsa Lund. These two mentioned above are former lovers and the two main characters of the 1942 film Casablanca. Why Rick speaks these words with despair is because of Ilsa Lund, whose archetype is common in most if not all noir movies. This archetype is known as the femme fatale which literally translates to, fatal woman.
Love is shown when Rick demanded that Ilsa leaves Casablanca with Victor and not stay with him like she wanted. Realizing that the adoration Victor had for Ilsa, in a great act of selflessness Rick facilitates the escape for the love of his life with another man. Loyalty is also displayed when the French officer, Captain Louis Renault, did not arrest Rick, although he witnessed Rick killing a German officer. Instead, he instructes his subordinates to “round up the usual suspects.” My most memorable moment is of the film is of Rick and Captain Louis walking down the airplane runway, darkness around them and fog swirling around their feet, plotting to leave Morocco for America.
The manner a person deals with difficulties or complications in their life, demonstrates who a person truly is. What Aristotle means with his quote and what I mean with what I said is that, when a person is going through serious hardships how they handle those hardships truly puts on display what kind of person they are. If you handle a complicated situation calmly and collected people see you differently then if you were to handle a situation making the outcome only suit and benefit you and no one else. In my opinion you would be more respected by dealing with things the most moral manner possible. Three conflicts of the story Of Mice and Men are: Lennie is holding George back because of George’s obligation and responsibility of Lennie.
In the novel, Tomorrow When The War Began, by John Marsden is about eight teenagers who confronted a situation that is out of their security and are trying to save their families. Fi, Homer, and Ellie are few of the characters that showed courageousness in the novel; finding out their unknown courage, taking risks, and not giving up to everything that happens. It is some of John Marsden’s message about courage. The characters also demonstrate it while they were in conflict with the soldiers who invaded their town and imprison their families in the Showground. Courage is what Ellie has that she never thought she had.
What if you had to shoot a family member, a pet, or someone that is caring to you? How would you feel about it? In the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck George and Lennie go on an amazing adventure but with a dramatic ending. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck displays compassion in George by how he takes in Lennie and helps him through life. George is happiest when he doesn 't have to yell at Lennie and, when George does yell, he feels terrible.
To be trapped in one's own mind may be the worst prison imaginable. In Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", the narrator of the story is constantly at battle with many different forces, such as John, her husband, the yellow wallpaper that covers the walls of her room, and ultimately herself. Throughout the story the narrator further detaches herself from her life and becomes fixated on the yellow wallpaper that surrounds her in her temporary home, slowly driving her mad. The narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a major and dynamic character as she is the main character of the story, and throughout the story her personality and ways of thinking change drastically.
However Strasser is still a Nazi patriot, evident in the scene in which he meets Rick in the Cafe, where Major Strasser and other German occupants begin singing the German patriot song, Die Wacht Am Rhein. In rebuttal, Rick demands the band plays 'La Marseillaise ', the Vichy Anthem. This scene uses close ups on the characters faces to show the emotion and power of the two contrasting songs. Strasser is also deceitful in the scene in which he quotes, "I 'm making out the report now. We havent quite decided whether he committed suicide or died trying to escape."
