Lack of Identity In A Clockwork Orange Identity is a very important aspect of a human’s life. In the novel A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, he explores the topic of loss and lack of identity. Anthony Expresses the fact that a person that lacks identity ceases to be a true human being. The novel revolves around a felonious juvenile boy named Alex, who resides with act of malicious violence and ruthless rape. In the course of time Alex is arrested and put into jail, where layer by layer his identity is taken off of him. The novel 3 ways a person can lose identity. This quote shows how he has changed through his past experiences and his is no longer the pure child that he once was, he has loss his identity. He has been affected by the corrupt society and has changed into a violent person. The last point is when one conforms with a group the lose who they are and follow instead of making choices themselves. An example that demonstrates this point is how Dim (Use to be in a gang with Alex) join the police force. Dim conforms to the corruption that is going on. He chooses to join the side that has more power, Instead of using his power to protect people he uses it to abuse people. Therefore when people are affected by a corrupt society they lose their identity. In conclusion, a reoccurring theme throughout the novel A Clockwork Orange is how people can lose their identity. The first way you can lose your identity is if you lose your free will. If you lose free will you can not make your own decisions and you lose your identity due to that.
