A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, is a three act Victorian era play that considers the differences in two relationship: Nora and Torvald’s and Kristine and Krogstad’s. Ibsen uses literary features to compare the relationship between Mrs.Linde and Krogstad with that of Nora and Torvald. In A Doll’s House, Ibsen appoints such literary devices as allegory, symbolism and contrast to present the difference in the honest relationship Kristine and Krogstad share to the insincere relationship Nora and Helmer have. Allegory is a common literary device used by Ibsen. The use of this feature allows the reader to have insight into the relationships. An example of allegory is when Mrs.Linde says “Two on one spar would be better off than each of us alone” (Ibsen 209), shows how they both would be better off together in life whereas they are not so great on their own. When the two start to develop their relationship for the second time, it is perceived that Kristine and Krogstad have a real relationship in which they can value each other equally. The lies between Nora and Torvald is what destroys their marriage, Mrs.Linde thought the revealing of the truth may repair and restore the love in their relationship just like it did for her. As soon as Kristine got the chance, she left a note at Krogstad’s house saying that she has to talk to him about something really important. The note symbolizes truth and honesty since Krogstad and Mrs. Linde had a talk about why she broke up with him and left him for a wealthier man. The many letters and notes written in this three act play represent honesty and a chance to open up to everything even at the end where the lies and secrets have been revealed.
