There were many rock bands that came before and after the Beatles. A Hard Day’s Night is a film that attempts to portray them as a unique and revolutionary band. It succeeds in this attempt as it shows the audience that a day in the life of the Beatles is something extraordinary, as one would expect of a rock band, yet it is also driven by simple desires and a bit of immaturity. That is what sets the Beatles apart from any other band at the time. This film uses comedy as one of its methods to exhibit the unique celebrity status of the band in multiple scenes.
Early on, the film shows signs of the band’s hooliganism. When they’re on the train, Lennon bursts into a cart full of girls and plays a skit pretending to be a freed prisoner. The girls, of course, know who he is and are not listening to what he is saying. They are just loving every moment of being in his presence. This is an entertaining scene to watch, but it also shows that if any average person were to try that, the girls would disapprove of this action.
Later on, they are asked to do a press conference which becomes a complete joke to them. They only show up for the food and drinks but are unable to access either when they are swarmed by the press. The band’s reaction to this situation makes for a charming scene but also shows how their celebrity status is unique to other stars. Due to their playfulness and immaturity which contradicted the professional environment that they worked in, they were able to captivate the affection of the younger generation. Finally, teenagers found a group that they were able to idolize, a group who represented their rebellious attitudes and something completely different to the ideologies of the older
