Alice would like to be financially stable by paying off student loans, purchasing a house and saving up for her children’s education, as well as accumulating assets so that she could finally retire and travel around the world in a sailboat. She must be able to pay off her student loans within 5 years so that she would be able to achieve her intermediate goals such as accumulating assets and having a surplus of income. Failing to reduce debt would mean forgoing her other intermediate and long-term goals. It is unlikely for Alice to cut down her expenses so increasing her income would be her only way out. Alice could reassess her goals and her priorities could change in a matter of years. It could be possible for her to purchase a home and choose to remain single for the rest of her life if she thinks that getting married and having a family of her own is irrelevant. Or she could be married but is incapable of bearing a child. Another possibility is that she can be married but would rather not have children at all. Regardless of her relationship status, having no children would make Alice free from further financial responsibilities such as saving up for her kids’ education. Alice could possibly lose her desire to travel around the world in a sailboat if she thinks that it is not important or if she prefers another mode of transportation for traveling or another activity to pursue. But if Alice chooses to stick to her original plan and to fulfill all of her 5 goals, then she would need to take a second, part time job and pay off her debts within 5 years such as her student loan and car loan which cost $55,700. After 5 years, her surplus must increase significantly by $7,720 per year, she must start accumulating assets, have a steady income, start thinking of getting a higher paying job, purchasing her own home and saving up for her children’s education which is good for 18
