Gaines had us notice how the character of Grant has changed from being an insensitive man to an compassionate human being. This novel discusses about the race relations and the experience of what a young man named Jefferson went through of being wrongly accused of murder. Grant, a school teacher was asked by Miss Emma to go and teach Jefferson how to die with dignity. Grant was a hopeless and selfish man at first, but towards the end he learned his lesson.
