In “Letter from Birmingham Jail” pathos was used throughout the letter. King gives his audience a chance to experience what is happening to him and his fellow African Americans by inserting emotional events. Such as the treatment from the Birmingham police when they “pushed and cursed young Negro females and slapped and kicked young Negro males.” ( King’s letter page 3) Yet after the mistreatment from the Birmingham police, King still didn’t insult them and preached to keep peacefully protest for their rights.
In turn, it was clearly an insult toward Wright’s style and intentions in literature. Baldwin was certainly aware of Wright’s intentions as he was familiar with his work. Afterall, Wright was idol for many years. In Wright’s essay, “Blueprint for Negro Writing” it is evident that the essay is intended for a black audience. Wright is critiquing black writers for being too artistic.

In the essay “Notes of a Native Son” by James Baldwin, he expresses feelings of hate and despair towards his father. His father died when James was 19 years old from tuberculosis; it just so happens that his funeral was on the day of the Harlem Riot of 1943. Baldwin explains that his father isn’t fond of white people due to the racist past. He recalls a time when a white teacher brought him to a theater and that caused nothing but upset with his father, even though it was a kind act. Many events happened to Baldwin as a result of segregation, including a time where a waitress refused to serve him due to his skin color and Baldwin threw a pitcher of water at her.
I chose to write my Response Essay on the story "Sonny's Blues" written by James Baldwin. In Sonny's Blues, the storyteller recounts the tale of his association with his sibling, Sonny. Sonny is a performer not able to get away from the ghetto. Disheartened by his sibling's suffering , the storyteller connects with him, yet discovers that Sonny's hurt powers his music. The narrator is a teacher in Harlem that has changed his life and got out of the ghetto where he grew up.

. The first quote by James Baldwin, I believe is talking about how the concept of racism fills many books and is constantly being debated or reflected on by different people everywhere. What Baldwin is trying to point out to the reader, is that this questioning of color is used to cover up who people really are deep down. I think he’s hinting at the idea that racism is used to cover up certain insecurities or fears people may have hidden inside of them. The second quote by Trey Ellis, goes down the list and displays all the different degrading names dark-skinned people have been called throughout history.
"I have begun this letter five times and torn it up five times. I keep seeing your face, which is also the face of your father and my brother" (1) indicates that Baldwin put time and effort into making this work as heartfelt as possible to make his message clear. The writing style he used in this message is one that shows that he is familiar with his audience, his nephew. At the same time, this language style is familiar because this letter can be used to address African-American teens other than his nephew James. Baldwin 's language in A Letter to My Nephew shows that he is pacifying his nephew for being born into the environment that he is in, but at the same time passing the blame onto the United States for creating such an environment.
James Baldwin’s experience with man versus self-struggle is also prevalent in his career, just like Sonny’s and his music career. As a young man, James Baldwin struggled with his sexual orientation of homosexuality. Once Baldwin’s mother remarried to a preacher, Baldwin was raised in a religious household, which influenced him greatly. As a result, his beliefs and ideas wavered greatly. However Baldwin thought otherwise. The year before his father's death, when he began working in New Jersey among Black Americans and white southerners, he realized for the first time how differently he is expected to act because of the color of his skin. Baldwin is first horrified and makes a point of going to places where he is aware that African people wouldn't be welcomed. After losing his job, he still believes that his time in New Jersey left him with a "disease" that stopped him from ever living a carefree life since the treatment may come back at any time. Rhetorical Reading Response Baldwin In James Baldwin's personal essay, "If Black English Isn't a Language, Then Tell me, What Is?" (1979), the author defines the development of language as primarily a political act through which a group of people establish a distinct identity. Baldwin shows this by giving examples of how language allows a group to define and express who they are from their own point of view, instead of having their reality expressed or misrepresented by another group. Baldwin's purpose for this essay is to defend, in an eloquent and convincing way, the idea that black English is a true language, in order to show that it meets the criteria of what defines a language as a method of expressing reality.
