“Tangerine Literary Analysis” Conquering a particular kind of fear involves immense courage, but once it has been conquered, it automatically helps you create peace with yourself. Once dealt with, it makes a person live a serene and stress-free life. The main summary of the book Tangerine is that a boy named Paul Fisher wears coke-bottle glasses since he supposedly became visually impaired due to over exposure to an eclipse . His inconsiderate and cruel brother Erik, has made the whole family crazy over his football dream. When the Fisher family moves to Tangerine, Paul comes to know about the upsetting reality behind his blindness. It’s shocking for him to know that his own brother is the real cause of his blindness and not an over exposure to an eclipse. In this book, Paul has many flashbacks and most of them show how much fear Paul has of Erik. On page 33 and 34, Paul has a flashback. “Something about the wall... something I needed to remember... A scene came back to me... Erik and his friends laughed about the joke.” Also on pages 167 and 168, Paul has another flashback involving Erik. “And I remembered... suddenly I felt the hot breath of a predator on my back. I screamed in terror. Erik laughed and ran over to Mom and Dad.” These two quotes mean that conquering fear can be daunting, especially since Paul has feared Erik for as long as he could remember. However, winning the battle against his fear will render him to reinvent his inner being. Paul repeatedly has flashbacks and eventually he realizes that Erik cannot keep bullying him and he has to take action. Flashbacks convey the theme since they show that Paul is petrified of Erik, but moving to Tangerine gives him the strength and competence to face
