From pages 80 to 82, we learn that the refugee camp it says that ‘Salva made up his mind. He would walk south to Kenya… crowds of other boys followed him. Nobody talked about it, but by the end of the first day Salva had become the leader of a group of about fifteen hundred boys.’ This explains how Salva doesn’t panic and think irrationally about situations like the Itang refugee camp closing, and when he decides to walk to Kenya, he follows through and helps three-fourths of the group arrive in Kenya safely. Obviously, Salva’s determination and hard work helps him get through the factors
The first big problem he deals with is thinking his family is dead in this war and not being with them (Park, 22). The second big problem is Salva losing the close people he was with like his only friend Marial (Park, 40) and Salva's uncle (Park, 63). The next problem is when Salva had a near-death experience (Park, 78,79). The last problem is when Salva had to deal with terrible refugee camps (Park, 84). Even with all of these issues (and more), Salva continued his journey and persevered as by the end of the book, he was in a good situation, living in New York City (Park, 98, 99), performing talks for his company (Park, 109) and being the CEO of a company that was helping South Sudanese villages with their water problems (Park, 115).

Salva was one of the many people that were struggling during this period of time. “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, is a book about how Salva had to leave his home and family due to a war, he was joined by people along the way of his journey, but really only had himself as support and motivation to keep going and not give up despite how hard it was. Salve faced many hardships during his youth including crossing the Akobo desert, crossing rivers, and never having clean water. Salva and almost all of Sudan had no easy access to water, people had to walk for hours on end just to get dirty water.
A Long Walk to Water One of the best things about a book is that it lets you see your life in a new light. “A Long Walk to Water” was written about a young boy named Slavs and a girl named Nya (different timelines) who struggle in the South Sudan war. A Long Walk to Water shows us the universal in the human experience. Somehow, I can relate to these characters yet my experience of life is so different. It might come as a surprise that a privileged white girl in Minnesota could relate to these characters, but there were many ways I could relate to them.
Salva was thrown straight on into the Sudanese war to fend for himself, so he was all alone without his family. Later on Salva realizes what has happened
As he runs away, he lacks water and shelter and depends on his life skills to get by. War occurs in South Sudan, and Salva Dut has to run away from his village and family to remain safe. As a "lost boy" refugee, he must journey on foot across Africa, searching for his family and safety. After surviving three refugee camps, Salva has been allowed to escape the war for a lifetime. Because many of the camps he stayed in were closed, Salva had to travel to other camps.
