Running though different territories and terrain, Salva was always carrying pain along with him, always collecting more everywhere he went, but he was still able to survive, whether it be physical or mental pain. A Long Walk to Water is a novel that is based on a true story by Linda Sue Park. The story is about a lot of the treacheries Salva, the main character, had gone through during the second Sudanese war. With people neglecting him, Salva grew stronger as he took in their doubt and negative thoughts about him; he grew stronger for his deceased uncle and friend to prove the doubters wrong. Salva settled on the fact that “there is no one left to help me. They think I am weak and useless.-… They are wrong and I will prove it” (66) Salva no longer has anyone to support him and his group believe him to be incapable and unworthy. “The walking began again. Walking – but to where? Not home. There is still war everywhere in Sudan. Not back to Ethiopia the soldiers would shoot us.”(79) With war still raging and spreading like a wild fire in Sudan, Salva still had to run from the violence of war, even in Ethiopia. “Salva took a few steps to see what he could see-… About a hundred paces in front of him, he could see a small pond. Between the pond and barn was a house – and yes, a woman sitting in the sun. holding his breath, he crept closer…”(15) “Salva had hoped to find the group outside the barn, but when he looked out Salva only spotted a pond, house and finally he spotted a lady resting in the sun.
