In A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park, “Salva’s Bio”, “Water for South Sudan: Salva’s Story,” and “Time Trip: Sudan’s Civil War,” many events that happened in Sudan and how people adapted to their challenging environment are shown. The characters I will focus on are Salva, Nya, Salva’s Uncle, the Lost Boy’s, and Sudan in general. The main point I will focus on is that individuals adapt in challenging environments by taking small steps to complete a big task, moving from one place to another, and taking advantage of the current environment and it’s resources. Salva had to adapt so that the group would not think he’s a laggard. Adaptation is a key point that is shown throughout the writings I have read, and all of the authors have demonstrated that people need to change to survive in a harsh environment. The authors of A Long Walk To Water and the article “Salva’s Bio” give examples of how Sudanese people take small steps to complete big tasks. Throughout these sources, there are many situations that must be solved with small steps because just diving in and doing the task could cause problems. “Salva helped provide safe and clean drinking water” (Salva’s Bio). Just installing one well helped Sudan get cleaner water and minimized disease happening. He had small steps of raising money and grew his awareness.
