You know in Sudan the majority of children die before reaching 5 years old, that's because of all the war lack of water and diseases that are in Sudan. It's also why there are so many refugees trying to leave Sudan. Salva also encountered many deaths including his siblings and people he was walking with while he was trying to flee Sudan. Salva was an 11 year old boy who slept at a barn with a group of people from his village, only for them to leave him the next morning, so Salva went to the women who owned the barn, who was also Dinka, and talked to her. Salva stayed with her for a few days, so he can get a place to stay and get food to eat, showing that salva is co-dependent on the women. “He worked hard so she would not send him away. For three days, he fetched firewood from the bush and water from the pond.” (18) Likewise, Salva was co-dependent on a boy named Marial, who was also Dinka and part of the group Salva went to Ethiopia with. Marial being in the group gave Salva a person to talk to and stay with, and sleep near. They also relate to each other by losing their families. Marial was also one of the only people in the group salva was able to talk and walk with before uncle came. This is proven on pages 29-30, “The boy was still looking at him. “Your family?” He asked. Salva shook his head. “Me too,” the boy said. He sighed, and Salva heard that sigh all the way to his heart. “I’m Marial” It was good to make a friend.” Also when Salva's uncle joined the group he was in, Salva relied on his uncle to look after and protect him. This is proved on Page 35 when the text said, “Uncle was quiet for a moment. Then he patted Salva’s shoulder. “Eh, Nephew!” …show more content…
After Salva was removed from the refugee cap in ethiopia, he decided to go to Kenya and stay in a refugee camp there. But as he was walking some boys began to follow him. “Salva no longer knew what to do so he decided to walk to kenya, and overtime boys began to follow him. Soon he was the leader of about 1500 boys.” He had then finally made the decision to stop relying on other people and do things for himself. He became the leader because he was a young man who looked liked he knew what he was doing, so boys thought it would be a good idea to follow him. Another example of Salva showing leadership skills is on page 81 “He organized the group, giving everyone a job: scavenge for food; collect firewood; stand guard while the group slept. Whatever food or water they found was shared equally among all of them. When the smaller boys grew to tired to walk, the older boys took turns carrying them on their backs.” In this part of the story Salva is organizing the group of boys he is walking to Kenya with, he is giving every boy a job and is making sure that the younger ones with be ok when they get tired. This helps Salva and all the other boys survive because everyone helps the group and gives and gets a fair share, so Salva and the other boys will stay alive. The last piece of evidence to prove how Salvas leadership helped him survive is, when some of the
