Adapting To Challenging Environments In A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park, “Time Trip: Sudan’s Civil War” by Scholastic, Salva’s Bio” and “Water for South Sudan: Salva’s Story”, many events that happened in Sudan and how people adapted to their challenging environment are shown. The characters I will focus on are Salva, Nya, Salva’s Uncle, the Lost Boy’s, and Sudanese people in general. The main point I will focus on is that individuals adapt in challenging environments by taking small steps to complete a big task, moving from one place to another, and taking advantage of the current environment and it’s resources. In the book ALWTW and the article “Time Trip: Sudan’s Civil War” it shows that Salva many had to use resources in their current environment. One example is that they ate leaves and berries and drank liquid from mud to stay alive, so they would not die of starvation and dehydration. (“Time Trip: Sudan’s Civil War”) The Sudanese had to eat and drink these things in the environment they were in, which meant they were using the resources from their environment, they did not invalidate eating because they needed to eat. On (pg. 36) Even…group. Salva ate an abundance of meat from the antelope they shot so he adapted by sharing his portion to everyone in the group. Salva ate too much so he vomited a lot after because he was not used to eating that much, it was antics of him to eat that much food. When Salva was traveling they had to hunt an antelope in the environment, they took advantage of the animals being there. Another situation was on (pg. 33) One…every day. Nya did not have to get water and walk far now, but she had to dig for water at the camp, she adapted by thinking it was not as bad. Nya took advantage of the current environment by getting water from the ground, instead of being churlish and not helping her family. In the book A Long Walk to Water, Salva eats berries and drinks muddy water so he could have less hunger and will not burst into crazy antics from not eating, and if people did not eat and drink they would starve. Another example of using resources was on page 33, “So they had to make do with whatever was at hand.” This meant they used resources they had around their current environment. While Nya does not have water, she needs to walk a long way to get water, so she uses a hole which has water to gain water and she carries it all the way back home, she adapted by going and getting water.
