Choices are present in every aspect of every society, and all humans are entitled to make choices throughout their lifetimes. One of those choices that must be made has to do with a theme that resonates throughout all of William Shakespeare’s plays. One of his works, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, can provoke a great amount of pondering on the subject of love. All individuals must decide for themselves how love works, whether it is a choice, or simply feelings that can’t be decided with the mind, or explained by those who are in love. Every story can be interpreted differently, and every person can draw a different conclusion and message from it; however, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, it can be argued that a person does not choose whomever it is that he or she falls in love with. People just love, and the wondrous answer to why it happens that way just might be found in this magical work by Shakespeare.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream tells multiple stories that end up affecting each other throughout the course of a night in Athens, Greece. There are lovers, Hermia and Lysander, who run to the forest to be together and fight for true love. Then there is Demetrius who loves Hermia even though she does not love him back. Hermia’s father, Egeus, favors Demetrius over Lysander, and will have Hermia punished if she does not do what he says. Demetrius has a suitor, named Helena, who deeply loves him. The relationship of Helena and Demetrius throughout the play is a complicated one, but it can immensely support an opinion that Shakespeare reflects on love. This opinion is that a person does not decide whom they love. Humans simply just love and let their feelings lead them to whomever that may be.
