Although many movies are based on a book, directors have their own point of views and visions of how the film should be created. Majority of the time, the ending of the film is altered to fit the change in the movie. In A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and the film A Monster Calls directed by J.A Bayona, the author and director of the novel and movie show two different endings to one story. In the novel, the reader is left with a cliffhanger while in the movie, the director creates an epilogue and giving the viewer closure. The novel compared to the movie shows a difference in character and plot making them different. Each has a different effect on the person reading or viewing. At this point, he has officially grown as a person and is enjoying the last couple moments that he has with his mother. This all occurs in the hospital, not long before his mother dies and ends with “and by doing so, he could finally let her go.” In the movie, this scene occurs but, it is not the end. Ironically, when they are in the hospital, the viewer sees that his mother can see the monster, just like Conor, and dies at 12:07. As the monster prepared him for this time, he comforts Conor and his mother during these last moments. The director creates an epilogue by showing what happens when they return home from the hospital. As he arrives, the viewer sees him smiling. Not because his mother just died, but because the monster helped him tell his truth, he was able to let her go easier and know that she will always be watching over him even though she is dead. Without the monster, he would not have been able to achieve this and would have been in a completely different state of mind. Conor’s grandmother finally shows him what was behind that door which she made sure he would not go into. When he is finally allowed to, he enters the room his mother grew up in.
