A character is defined as a “fictional representation of a person” (230). A strong character is essential in literary fiction, especially in a genre of writing such as short story where the author has a limited amount of time to tell a story. The authors’ goal is often to create a realistic depiction of a person; one that will keep readers engaged and drives the momentum of the plot. In every story-but more specifically a short story- the protagonist is the catalyst for the plot. Authors use many different types of character classifications such as round, flat, stick, dynamic, or static.to build an interesting story.
Sometimes characters represent more than the reader may think. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, tells the story of a wealthy man, Jay Gatsby, and his love for Daisy. Throughout the novel, many characters are brought up. On the surface, they seem almost unimportant, but after reading through the story it is made known that each of these people can represent different archetypes. Archetypes are perfect examples or perfect models of something.
These traits allow the story to flourish a change in Sammy that couldn’t be seen if the story wasn’t told by him. The audience sees his change from a boy attracted by a bunch of girls to a rebellious man challenging the system he doesn’t want to take part in. The interesting thing is that both of those desires are ultimately why he quits his job. This is seen when he says “... “I quit” to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero,” he wants the girls to like him because he’s still an immature boy looking for their affection (Updike 23). Though soon Sammy is challenged by his Lengel to think about his actions and he thinks “But it seems to me that once you begin a gesture it’s fatal not to go through with it,” this shows that it’s also Sammy convictions that push him to quit.
Sammy even at the beginning of the story you learn that he doesn’t think as himself as a follower or a sheep. Sammy doesn’t consider himself to be like his fellow co-workers Lengel and Stokeise who follow the guidelines of this corporation. Sammy begins to change when these three girls with bathing suits walk into the store. The presence of the girl’s cause Sammy to make an error at the register. The girls wearing bathing suits make Sammy think about the defiance of the norm.
All readers have come across the stereotypical character who is charming, good-looking, and the savior of the story and our hearts, but that is present in commercial fiction. In literary fiction, characters are something greater and deeper. In literary fiction, characterization is considered one of the most important elements in an author’s work. Characterization is the concept of creating a character.
The time to Mature As the story of “A&P” unfolds, readers can see a change in the main character from the start of the story to the end. John Updike’s main character Sammy in “A&P” conveys the theme of growing up through making decisions based on how others are treated, and what he wants for himself in order to mature and find his identity. Throughout the beginning of the story readers can see that Sammy is still a very immature nineteen year old because he easily gets distracted by three girls who enter into his job in bathing suits. “The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece”.
A short story, novel, or screenplay always has a character. The idea of a character is to provide a point of view to the story. While quitting his job is not the most practical course of action, Sammy forcefully acts upon Lengel’s injustice in hopes Queenie will see his heroism. His attack on Lengel’s paternalism and embarrassment is to no avail for this hope, however; as Sammy follows outside, he is met by vast openness.
