A short story, novel, or screenplay always has a character. The idea of a character is to provide a point of view to the story. Dynamic and static characters are two types of characters that allow the story or stories to catch the reader's attention. Dynamic and static characters bring the literary characters to life so the reader can have a better understanding and be engaged. A dynamic character is someone that goes through significant change, and a static character is someone that remains the same throughout the story. The short stories "The Most Dangerous Game," "How I Met My Husband," and "The Things They Carried" provide different examples of dynamic and static characters.

Edie is a maid that works for the Peebles family. She is an innocent girl who doesn't know what she has planned for her life. She showed it when she said, "the work was hard; they didn't make it nice or explain." Another example was when Mr. Peebles had to explain that intimacy meant more than just kissing. Towards the middle of the story, Edie grows fond of Chris Watters, but she then found out that Chris Watters has a fiancé. Chris then disappears and tells Edie that he promises that he will write to her. After Chris left, Edie would wait by the mail to see if he had written her a letter. Edie started to show how her character was changing because although she still may be innocent, she is beginning to realize things. She realized that "No letter was ever going to come." Edie stopped going to the mailbox, but Edie was surprised when the mailman asked for her because he had missed her. Edie marries the mailman, and they have a family. Edie's husband likes to tell their children that Edie would go after him every day and wait for him at the mailbox. Edie agrees with what he says because she says, "I like for people to think what pleases them and makes them happy." Edie grows from being an innocent girl to a realistic
