The first part of mise en scene that can be noted from the very beginning of the film is the color. Everyone in this time period was forced to wear basic colors, and nobody stood out from the crowd. Emily and Vryling took it upon themselves to go against the norms, as they both commonly wore bright colors and dressed different than everyone else. Then when Emily’s father died and her family was wearing black to show mourning, she chose to wear white to once again show she was different from society. The twirling is seen every time Vrying made one of your jokes about society. The last part of mise en scene that also stands out constantly throughout this film is the lighting. Lighting stands out often through the movie, because it is lit with candles for a vast majority of the scenes. This gave the audience a clear view at all of their facial expressions. This hinted at how each of the characters were feeling during that time,
