An American Dream “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry is a play set in Chicago Southside in World War 2 that focuses on the struggles of an African family that is dealing with poverty, Beneatha the daughter of Mama and Walter Lee’s sister is a character who is focused, adventurous, and motivated.
Beneatha is focused on her studies and her dream is to become a doctor, and that makes her different from other women because they were only expected to marry and start a family. When she is with her family she talks about her desire to be a doctor. In the text Beneatha states “ I am going to be a doctor and everybody around here better understand that!” (Hansberry, 50).This statement shows that she is focused on her …show more content…

Beneatha wants to connect with her roots and explore her African heritage. In scene two Asagai gifts Beneatha a colorful robe that is from Nigeria and it made Beneatha want to learn more about her African heritage because she used to always want to talk to Asagai about Africa. In the text Asagai states “ I am looking for my identity” (Hansberry, 62). Based on Beneatha's actions towards the Nigerian robe and conversasion with Asagai she wants to know about her heritage more and wanting to know about her roots, because she always wants to talk to Asagai about Africa
Lastly,Beneatha is a highly motivated character. She is motivated to make a difference in the world and achieve her goals to become a doctor. Beneatha was not letting anything stop her from becoming a doctor. In the text it states "I'm going to be a doctor. I'm not worried about who I'm going to marry yet—if I ever get married." (Hansberry, 50 ). Beneatha thinks that she can become a doctor and wants to prove to her family that she could become a doctor, due to the time era many women could not become a doctor, but this motivates Beneatha more because she wants to prove her family
