A Raisin In The Sun written by Lorraine Hansberry is a play that displays the struggle of an African-American family named the Youngers. They have been given the news about receiving $10,000 as insurance money because of the death of their father. Everyone is excited about receiving this large amount of money that will change everyone's lives but this only lasts for a while. Since each individual has a dream about what to do with the money which will cause a disagreement in the family. Having one person decide on what to do over accepting the opinions of others will cause a sense of betrayal from another.

This type of feeling has happened to Mama when she decides to give some money to Walter after buying the house with the insurance money. In addition for Mama, it was to get a decent home and stay united as a family but this dream was part of the competition from the beginning when deciding what to do with the money. Mama decides to buy a house in a white community which becomes a problem since they will be the only African family but it benefits everyone to start a new chapter and stay together as a family. To also mention for Mama her family is the most important thing in the world. Mama just wants the best for her family just like anyone else would, but she realizes that the house they are living in right now is not in the best living conditions. As time went by the dream Mama had of moving into the new house altogether faded each item into an impossible expectation to reach since each time something new (problems) came up. For instance, how she was betrayed by Walter when she trusted him that he would put three thousand dollars apart for her school fees and thirty-five hundred dollars for him to do his investment, but he took everything. When she found this out she was shocked and disappointed since that part of the money was going toward Beneatha’s future. This plays a part where Walter has forgotten about how much his family means to him. He put his own selfishness and greed ahead which made him betray his sister’s future
