By the end of “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, the Younger’s lives are beginning to improve. Compared to the state of the family at the opening of the play, most considered that play ends on a joyous moment. However; that is not so for the Younger family. The way the play ends is not a happy ending because the Younger family does not have the funds that they need, two people are further from their dreams, and they are moving into a neighborhood to could be dangerous for them. Although one may be excited that things appear to be better for the Younger’s, the reality is that things could possibly be worse for them. After a visit from Karl Lindner, the family learned that the white neighbors were willing to do whatever it may take to keep the Younger 's from moving in. However, little did the family know, it would be more than simply offering to buy the house back. During the 1950s and sixties, there was no limit to what white people would do to stop integration. Lorraine Hansberry 's own situation demonstrated this. Mobs surrounded the home and pelted the children with spit and curses (Hansberry 1215). In addition, her mother spent the night patrolling their home with a German luger to protect the family from the terror they faced from their white neighbors (Hansberry 1215). The Younger’s were moving to a new home, which was something to be celebrated. Yet, by doing this they were risking their lives. Thus, the happy ending that they believed they had was about to come to an abrupt ending. The Younger family had been through many obstacles, and purchasing a home seem to be the end of their difficult times. However, this only brought new issues into their lives. They did nit have the finances to pay bills, Walter and Beneatha did not have the means to accomplish their dreams, and they were going into a situation that posed serious danger. At the end of the play, this family was not going into a happy ending. Instead, they were entering into a new series of
