Most everyone in the world has the mindset to do something extraordinary. By definition the word mindset means, the established set of attitudes held by someone. In the play Walter has a mindset based on money, and if you have money, you will have a good life. In Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun, Walter Lee Younger faces consequences, that causes him to change, and eventually to regain his family's respect. Walter Lee Younger is a thirty-five year old African American man living in Chicago in the 1950s. He lives in a very small apartment located in a poor area of Chicago known as the South Side. He thinks that if he can own a business it will show everyone that he is successful and he will be respected and treated like a man. Walter’s mother receives a $10,000.00 life insurance payment for the death of her husband, Walter tries to convince her to give him all of the money to invest in a liquor store. Mama wants to use the money to make a down payment on a new house in a white neighborhood. Mama puts some of the money towards the new house and Walter continues to harass Mama until eventually he wears her down. Mama decides to give him $6,500.00. She asks him to deposit it in the bank and manage the money. Mama insists he keep $3,000.00 of the money for his sister’s medical school tuition. Mama thinks this will help him feel like he is the man of the house. Walter does not care what his mother has asked and he gives the entire amount to two questionable men to invest in the liquor store. Not surprisingly, one of the men runs off with the money. Walter desperately holds onto the possibility of his dreams coming true, denying the fact that he has been swindled.
