Many people have dreams of becoming something. For example, the reason why we all go to school is because every single one of us has our personal dreams to accomplish. However, the reason why most people spend their time on learning is to get a better paying job. Similarly, in A Raisin in the Sun Hansberry shows that Beneatha's dream was to become a doctor, and change her lifestyle; unfortunately, she didn’t achieve her dream because of her color and gender. She dated two very different men. Their names are George and Asagai. However, she was very happy with Asagai, her Nigerian boyfriend. Also, he gave her the nickname “Alaiyo”, which means one for whom bread_food_ is not enough. On the other hand, she is always depressed and angry when she is with George. She wasn’t happy with George the way she was happy with Asagai. One reason why Beneath was most interested in being with Asagai was because he had more knowledge about his African roots than George. As a result, Beneatha didn’t achieve her dream, because of her color and her gender. One reason why her dream didn’t come true was because she was black and there were a lot of segregation in the 1950s, and the black people didn’t have as much freedom as the white people. Another reason why Beneatha’s dream didn’t come true was because of her gender identity, and she was a female. Back then, during the 1950s, all females didn’t have as much freedom of getting authority over everything as today. For instance, back then during the 1950s, females stayed home and took care of the kids while the men went out to work as breadwinners. Lastly, Walter’s family got ten thousand dollars from their fathers life insurance after their father passed away. At that time, ten thousand dollars was as worth as one hundred thousand dollars today. Everyone was very excited when they saw the mail truck arriving at their house.
