From the birth of the nation to today, the idea that the United States of America was built on the foundation of democracy remains unwavering. Throughout history, many different figures have molded and shaped democracy in their own ways, changing how the nation perceives and defines democracy. From Martin Luther King Jr.’s inspirational speeches that shook the nation to the riveting case of Brown v. The Board of Education that contributed to the hard fought battle against inequality. Among those figures and events that redefined democracy and therefore the country, stands Ronald Takaki. Known for his work in ethnic studies, Takaki pioneered studies into African American history, being the first professor at UCLA to teach African American history.
In chapter fourteen of A Different Mirror by Ronald Takaki, the author elaborates how all nations contributed to political and economic climate during the 20th century. As World War II escalated in Europe and Asia, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made a speech to Congress on January 6, 1941, stating that we support those who struggle to gain human rights and that our nation has the destiny to have people gain freedom everywhere. Critical Reflection and Analysis Co-working a case through conducting direct work with an eight-year old girl, I used professional curiosity to explore an alarming self-disclosure made to me about her sleeping with a fifteen-year old boy, who was a non-relative. By keeping an open mind, avoiding making assumptions, analysing what was said and observing the child’s body language, I determined that whilst this incident was really inappropriate, there was nothing untoward happening. However, to safeguard and minimise risk for the child, I relayed this information to the relevant social worker so the concern could be properly addressed and resolved. Reflecting on this clinical practice has been unquestionably beneficial to me. It is helped me ascertain further information about dignity and the importance of it. It has also allowed me to evaluate the care I give and develop personally and professionally. Using the Gibbs (1988) reflective framework has enabled me to look at all aspects of the clinical practice and gain essential information relating the maintenance of dignity. I have found this assignment of reflecting extremely interesting and have enjoyed learning new things about myself and the care I give in clinical practice.
One of the most prevalent ethical issue associated with reflective practice is that of confidentiality, although no names are revealed when reflection takes place, it can be questioned as to whether the interactions we have with patients should be used to help further our professional development (Hargreaves J. 1997).
