Songwriters usually write songs about experiences that people can relate to. They do this because it makes people want to listen to it more. Ed Sheeran is no exclusion. Ed Sheeran’s fifth single “Small Bump” was released to the public on May 25, 2012, but it had been released along with the full “Plus” album on September 9, 2011 by Warner Music in the United Kingdom. Ed Sheeran is a singer/ songwriter from Suffolk who was born on February 17, 1991. This song is about a mother’s most painful experience possible- the death of their unborn child. He used rhetorics when he wrote this song to share the story about a painful experience that he saw someone go through hoping that it would help others.

The whole song is about falling in love with an unborn baby that ends up dying four months before birth. The song is divided into four verses along with the chorus and bridges. This song really does come from the heart. Ed wrote this having his friend in mind. “You're just a Small Bump unborn, Four months you're brought to life, You might be left with my hair, but you'll have your Mother's eyes, I'll hold your body in my hands be as gentle as I can, and now your scan on my unmade plans, Small bump four months then brought to life” (Sheeran) is the first verse. The first verse is about when the baby was still in the belly of the mother and the father was making plans for the small child awaited. Also “You’re just a small bump” is going to be repeated throughout the whole song. The bridge, “I'll whisper quietly, I'll give you nothing but truth, If you're not inside me, I'll put my future in you”(Sheeran), is basically saying that the baby is in his mind while in the mother’s belly and he wants to protect it from harm's way. The chorus, “Cause you are my one, and only. And You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight. Oh you are my one, and only. You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight. They are used because they capture the public's eye. This is a good thing considering the public is usually the target audience. Songwriters know this so they will make sure to include rhetorics. Rhetorics might also be included accidentally since it is such a simple thing. People can relate to other people and their emotions. This is why pathos is usually the main rhetoric that is seen. Ethos makes us believe things easily and since most people won't look more into things, it works. Logos appears to our logic which is not very hard if it makes sense. They can also give us a visual and our eyes will take care of that. This is common knowledge and songwriters use this in their advantage to sometimes share stories that people can hopefully relate to so it can help them or keep them
