Guarding the News: An Analysis of The Guardian
The Guardian is a self proclaimed “lean left” or “centre-left” newspaper originally published in the UK (AllSides: Media Based Ratings). The paper additionally offers US, UK, Australian, and International editions online. The audience and context to which this paper reports has a large scope. I will be analysing the newspapers online US edition. The Guardian can be reached using: https://www.theguardian.com/us. An investigation of the sight exposes how The Guardian uses rhetorical strategies to their advantage in order to spread news through a lense of left wing bias and create a sense of readership community.
The first item that pops-up on The Guardian is an plea for donations. The bright yellow pop-up establishes while the site does not have a paywall they need “help” keeping “journalism open” and ask for readers help. The message is accompanied by a link to their contribution page. A similar message appears at the end of articles published on the site. What does this mean? While

In today's society value is placed on the “instant gratification, always connected, sharing” lifestyle. The reflects this by offering fast, relevant and accurate news. Articles are reported in regard to the context of time and the context of the literary conversations being had about those topics. This is exemplified by the papers financial section offering live coverage of topics such as the stock market. Live coverage offerings exemplify a clear understanding of kairos. The feed was constantly updated with information on the state of the stock market on a day the market was under close scrutiny (Feb 8, 2018). The feed was littered with soundbites by important financial players, changes in stock prices, and tweets related to the issue. This system/ method of reporting shows The Guardian understands they are competing in a world of “quick news” and can keep up with sites like
