Tone and word choice are major key factors for getting readers a full and vivid experience of what you’re trying to tell them. In “The Devil’s Thumb”, Krakauer chooses to utilize downsizing, depressing words and phrases in his writing like, “Beyond shame”, “self-pity”, “felt so alone”, “abandoned”, “vulnerable”, etc. His word choice overall gives a bitter tone to the story. He uses these words to give a more vivid, detailed description of how he was truly feeling at that very moment. While stuck in a snow storm, sitting in a dug out hole, he thought, “Beyond shame, I cradled my head in my arms and embarked on an orgy of self-pity.”
My definition of rhetoric before the readings was simply: successful written or oral communication with a clear purpose & audience in mind. After completing the readings, I have decided that is not specific enough and does not encompass what rhetoric really is. The readings by Crusus, Channell, and Drucker helped establish a clear relationship between argument, “mature reasoning”, and communication as a mode used to communicate. Both of the readings provided a clearer understanding of argument and communication, key components to rhetoric, but did not change my definition until I read “The Rhetorical Situation” by Bitzer. The idea of a rhetorical situation, provided a clear application of the question: “What is rhetoric?”
Chapter 11 is about friendship. There are many different things that go into friendship such as, the nature of friendship, how friendships are developed, specific rules for the friendship, and also the pressures on the friendship. But for this particular incident I will focus on the pressures placed on the friendship. This pressure can from an internal or external place. The internal tensions of a friendship breaks down into three different parts.
The article Full Circle, by James McBride, is about his detailed observations of key areas in Dakar, Senegal. He uses his own experience from America to form a dominant view to reinforce his validity in his statements. This leads to his main point to fully take root that hardships have always inspired music and that rap/hip-hop, “It all comes home to Africa”. Rap has always been a genre used to show self-expression and “Rap doesn’t belong to the American culture, it belongs here. It has always existed here, because of our pain and the hardships and our suffering.”
In light of the 10th anniversary of the Iraq war, Tomas Young, a former veteran on hospice writes “The Last Letter” (2013). In Young’s letter, he elucidates that the war was anything but necessary. He asserts that the lives of veterans, the family of those veterans, and even those in Iraq and America, will be spent in “unending pain and grief.” His purpose in persuading the audience, in this case George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, to change perspective of the war, its many deaths, and disappointments, to call out their reasons for initiating the war and to call out the injustice of what the Iraq war has done to millions of people, is successfully achieved in Young’s letter with the use of a tremendous amount of figurative language and appeals
Within the story, Devil's Thumb had an ironic and angry tone. For the most part, there were words and phrases that expressed anger in the story. In the beginning, Krakaeur said "I'd told my boss I was quitting:","No, Not in a couple of weeks, Steve; right now was more like what I had in my mind". This proclamation shows how infuriated and unsatisfied, he was with his current job and his life. The ironic part is that he that foresees and believes that this will change his life, but in the end he finishes where he started.

Songs in the modern day have very intricate “literary devices.” It could be conveying a hidden message, reference, or mood using the lyrics or instruments to be vocal about something. The Book Thief by Markus Zusac is a historical fiction novel about a young girl (Liesel Meminger) who goes to her new home with her foster parents. She has a difficult time building new relationships at first, but as she settles in, she develops new friendships that make up the story. The soundtrack encompasses a series of depressing, destructive, bright, and mood changing songs that represent how relationships are often worth sacrificing for.
Within the passage, it is made quite evident rather quickly, what sort of values the characters hold near and dear to their hearts, and the type of society that they find themselves in. These values or ideals, as well as the type of society are revealed to the reader through the interactions and thoughts of the characters conversing. As the passage progresses along, the ideals of the individuals begin to become very clear. In doing so, it is obvious that the Lord carries a slightly different set of ideals as compared to the two other women.
The Presidential election of 1968 caused a major shift in American foreign policy, with the issue of ending the Vietnam War being a main point of debate. The contenders for the presidency were Richard M. Nixon and Hubert Humphrey, with Nixon winning the presidency. Although both candidates ran similar campaigns they approached the topic of Vietnam differently. A major difference between their campaigns was the rhetoric used, with Nixon promising to get America out of the war quickly. The rhetoric of the 1968 election and the year following set in motion Richard Nixon’s rise to power which led to the end of the Vietnam War, this was accomplished effectively and within the first four years of his presidency through the promises made and his ability to accomplish them.

Good Morning Mr. Sale, I know that you are working to find a good niche for me, but I thought it might be useful to put in writing some ways that I think can serve the students of Swain County. AP USH. I would like to continue teaching AP for a few more years until I can mentor someone to take over the program. I believe that AP provides a valuable opportunity for our students to learn academic skills that will help them succeed in college, but more importantly, I think it helps them hone their “grit” skills. They often realize they can achieve more than they ever thought possible.
“Stephen King Essay Response” Over time the idea of entertainment changes. In the past entertainment consisted of live events. Today entertainment consists of live events, movies, plays, etc. Entertainment can further be broken down into smaller categories: mystery, suspense, horror, romance, etc.
In the autobiography Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler, he expresses his political ideologies and strategies in ruling over millions of people. He mostly reveals his perspectives on racial matters, asserting that the Aryan race is dominant over any other ethnic groups. Although Adolf Hitler’s statements successfully convinced and appealed to almost all the people in the Germanic nation, his arguments, however, are undoubtedly loaded with logical fallacies. In Chapter 11 of the autobiography, Hitler mainly focuses on his notions regarding racial superiority.
The Prison Door In this Chapter from The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne introduces the setting of the book in Boston. He uses a gloomy and depressed tone in the beginning of the chapter. He is able to convey this tone using imagery while describing the citizens, the prison, and the cemetery. However, as he continues to discuss the rose-bush, he uses parallelism to shift the tone to be brighter and joyful. To create a gloomy and depressed tone, Hawthorne uses imagery.
