The point of these oral presentations was analyze how the authors of the texts presented their persuasive arguments. The goal of my group in particular was to read the text carefully, more than once, and break down techniques that the author uses to make himself more credible, logical, and emotionally connected to the reader. My partners and I looked for patterns in the author’s writing style and tried to understand why he chose the words he used. In, What You Eat Is Your Business by, Radley Balko, it is evident that Balko uses humor and rhetorical questions to make his point that literally what you eat should be your own business.

The one thing that any author must do when writing any sort of essay is to make it comprehensible to the reader. In order to achieve this, the author must utilize anything to get their point across or else the writing would be futile. In Turkeys in the Kitchen , Dave Barry gives his own personal stories about his Thanksgiving and how he feels that men aren’t as useful as women in the terms of the culinary arts (kitchen), Barry’s flippant tone and his use of rhetorical devices such as similes and irony bring forth a light hearted explanation of stereotypes between men and women as well as describing how men are useless in the kitchen. The uses of similes throughout the essay give purpose by showing how men are useless.

The article “Consider the Lobster” by David Wallace opens a vivid, gruesome window, to a harsh truth that all lobster consumers push far back into the recesses of their minds. Wallace implores us to visit the controversial issue of boiling a live creature to death, for the sole purpose of our consumption. He uses a variety of literary persuasive tactics including the three rhetorical appeals Logos, Pathos and Ethos to drive home his argument to the reader. Throughout the article Wallace puts the reader on the front lines of a three-front war of convincing ethical, emotional and logical appeals.
Rhetorical Analysis Essay: Consider the Lobster The lobster is a disgustingly beautiful creature, known for its delicate taste, menacing shell and controversy. In his essay, “Consider the Lobster”, David Foster Wallace describes the events and festivities of the Maine Lobster Festival and the history of the lobster to deliver a poignant message about the moral implications of killing and eating animals. Wallace is able to develop his position and vividly capture the audience’s attention through a strong use of humor, deliberate tonal shifts and a unique structure. David Foster Wallace, and “Consider the Lobster” in particular, are known for their footnotes- and for good reason.
In Jonathan Foer’s argumentative essay “Let Them Eat Dog”, he makes a very convincing argument for the consumption of dog, a surprising topic to argue for. However, when one reads through his excerpt, it’s quite difficult to escape the sound logic he utilizes throughout the piece. Ranging from commentary on the taste of dog meat to points about the ecological impact it would have if the U.S. started eating dog, Foer is persuasive and reasonable. So reasonable, in fact, that it begs the reader to question exactly why he would put so much effort into arguing for eating dog, something that most people won’t change their minds on no matter how logical the argument is. The reason why I put a slogan on my poster is because it gives more information about my propaganda poster. Another reason why my slogan is “Burn Books Down” is because it is short, simple, and easy to say and the message is clear to the targeted audience that books are bad and should be burned. My target audience is the citizens in the novel. My target audience is the citizens because my propaganda poster is to show and convince the citizens from a government perspective that books are bad and that they should be burned into ashes.

Food, Inc., a documentary that demonstrates the current and growth method of food production since the 1950’s, is designed to inform Americans about a side of the food industry. Food Inc. also used persuasion to demonstrates some components of pathos, logos, and ethos while uncovering the mysterious side of the food industry in America. Robert Kenner, the director of Food, Inc., made this film for a purpose. Uncovering the hidden facts and secrets behind the food industry in America.
The poster depicted a Japanese soldier carrying a naked, white women. Many posters like this one demonstrated severe amounts of racism in order to cast the enemies as less than human. This influenced the audience to then morally justify the way they feel about the enemy. Within Holder’s speech there were instances of multiple fallacies. One specific fallacy is the generalizations Holder makes in his speech, much like the ones that were used for deductive reasoning. These generalizations were often subjective and not backed up with evidence, which leads to hasty generalizations. Holder states that those who are against animal testing are mainly youth, which infers that all youth are against animal testing. However, it is not just youth who are against animal testing and not all youth are not against animal testing.
In Animal Farm, George Orwell warns how power will often lead to corruption. Napoleon was placed in a position of power after Major died, and he slowly starts to lavish in his power and become addicted to the lush life of a dictator. When Napoleon first becomes a leader, he expresses how everyone will work equally, but as his reign goes on, he shortens the work hours. At the very end of the novel, the observing animals even start to see that pig and man had become the same. The irony present in the above example, illuminates how regardless of how much a ruler promises to maintain equality and fairness, the position of power that they hold, will corrupt them.
Living Like Weasels Rhetorical Analysis In her essay “Living Like Weasels”, Annie Dillard explores the idea of following a single calling in life, and attaching one’s self it this calling as the weasel on Ernest Thompson Seton’s eagle had. Dillard presents her argument using the analogy of a weasel and how the; “weasel lives as he’s meant to, yielding at every moment to the perfect freedom of single necessity” (Dillard). In constructing her argument, however, she often contradicts herself undermining the effectiveness of her argument and leaving the reader confused. Dillard primarily uses ethos and pathos to support her argument and concerning both, the reader discovers; inconsistencies in her character, and conflicts between her perceptions
People say a picture is worth a thousand words. Just about every picture has rhetorical elements incorporated into their design. In this case, the well-crafted poster for Steven Spielberg’s film, Jaws, implements the use of ethos, pathos and logos in an attempt to get its audience to see the film. The poster for jaws is very effective at gaining the audience’s attention through the use of graphic pictures.
