William Faulkner, the author of “A Rose for Emily, ” uses different literary elements in this short story to help the reader understand more about this twisted, stuck in the past, murder, and love story. He makes readers very intrigued in the story by providing these elements throughout this story. In this short story, Emily Grierson is the main character. The townspeople talk the most about her; they think she is all the town revolves around. Emily was a skinny, quiet, and pale girl who only had her father. Over time, Emily became alone because her father was selfish toward his daughter. Emily grew old, fat, and she dressed in black. Her voice was dry and cold when she spoke. Emily was living a life she did not want. Miss Emily had her own setting, which was her home. Miss Emily never left her home, not even to get the mail. Her home was her favorite place, but she felt like she did not fit in there. Outside Miss Emily's home was an old town filled with few people so gossip traveled fast and the people were nosy. Her father would not allow her to marry anyone. The townspeople think that she turned out weird because of how her father treated her and raised her. Emily chose a man her father would disapprove of after her father’s death. It is like Emily thinks her father is still there, and she wants to make him angry. The second conflict is between Emily and Homer Barron. Homer and Emily were seen together by the townspeople. Of course, the town had to talk about it. When Emily found out Homer was gay, she became angry, but she did not let it show. She liked Homer, but he also did not want to be married. When she found out he was gay, that was something else Emily did not like. In order for Emily to keep him, she thought she had to poison him to keep him forever, so she would not stay
