For my essay I have chosen “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and As I Lay Dying for my second story. Both stories portray feminism but in two different ways. In “A Rose for Emily” the lead character can be portrayed as a strong independent woman while in “ As I Lay Dying” the female character succumbs to the men in her life. In the story “A Rose for Emily” the lead character Emily defies the social norms and does what she pleases. She was seen with a man who was above her social class and still went out with him anyways no matter what the others thought about her. When her father died it was normal for women in that time period to go live with family or a chaperone yet Emily continued to live in her own with only a servant with her. She made an agreement with the father of her unborn baby to have sex with him if he helped her pick cotton, although she tried to resist from that agreement she was compelled to go through with it and from that agreement came her unwanted pregnancy. On the journey that her and her family take to bury her mother she searches for abortion pills to get rid of the unborn baby she does not want. In the town Jefferson she walks into a store hoping to buy some pills and instead gets tricked into performing sexual duties for pills that were merely sugar pills. She was dominated by two men on different occasions to do their bidding in attempt to gain something in return. This portrays women as weak and incapable of doing things for themselves and that they need a man to fix their
