"I was reckless when I was young. I educated myself by cursing the heartlessness of the world. The world was cruel - so I made myself more heartless and used that as a weapon, trying to follow through on my ideals." The first impression that Kiritsugu Emiya offers is one of a soulless person. The former evidenced by his way of expressing himself (or mostly the lack of thereof) and his actions throughout the whole story. However, that statement, while having a slight degree of veracity, doesn't really define Kiritsugu's character. He has experienced many things that have shaped his mindset, so calling him "soulless" denies all of the development he has gone through. First of all, during his youth Kiritsugu always yearned for something that itself can be called childish, but for him... it was something serious. He always wished to be a someone whose purpose was to defeat the evil and to defend the world— or more specifically, be a hero. He has carried this wish since his childhood and even after reaching his adulthood, he still has the very same wish. This only was the beginning for the man known as Kiritsugu, who killed his own father after the discovery of this fact, to avoid the same experience happening
