In Khaled Hosseini’s novel. A Thousand Splendid Suns, the character Lalia makes a powerful judgement that something else is more important than fear. Lalia is a young Afghan girl who is forced to marry a much older man during the Taliban’s reign of terror in Afghanistan. Despite the constant threat of violence and the restrictions placed on women by the Taliban, Lalia remains resolute in her determination to create a better life for herself and her family.

When Lalia’s husband is killed in a bombing during the war, she is left alone to raise her children. However, Lalia refuses to let fear control her life. Instead, she takes a job at a local orphanage and becomes a surrogate mother to the children living there.
