“Human tragedies: we all want to be extraordinary and we all just want to fit in.Unfortunately, extraordinary people rarely fit in.” (Sebastyne Young). Fitting in has always been a struggle for youths and adults alike. From the media we are presented with from a young age, in modern America the goal of many is to find happiness by living a perfect, normal life. However, this is not everyone’s fate, and not everyone can be content in this lifestyle, as is seen in A Three Dog Life, written by Abigail Thomas A Three Dog Life is set in 21st century America. A woman of Abigail’s age, sixty, would be expected to be happily retired, with a loving husband and children. But Abigail defies this standards, and instead lives with three dogs with varying personalities who essentially become her closest friends, “Carolina cannot stop trembling. Harry loves my friend and Rosie leaps up for kisses”(Page 75). Because she does not have a husband, Abigail has more time for her female friends, and she makes stronger bonds in that way, “My friend Claudette always comes to the rescue”(Page 85). She also has more time to do things she enjoys, such as knitting and spending time with her dogs. For Abigail Thomas, New York in the 21st century makes lasting friends with unique people and has plenty of time for her hobbies, but the proximity to her husband and bad weather can be depressing at times. Although it is hard for Abigail to be living in such a large, busy city at the age when most women her age would be spending their lives relaxing in a calm, warm place, the struggles she faces improves her as a person. A Three Dog Life shows that everyone needs to challenge themselves, and life is supposed to be hard
