Witnessing these two ethical issues have increased my awareness of the legal and ethical standards of the counseling field. I understand the difference between legal and ethical standards and how some situation may not always result to legal involvement. I was able to observe how the staff handled each situation and how the decision/issue affected the patient in numerous ways. During supervision, I practiced using ethical decision making skills and explored how I would have handled each ethical issue differently. I have learned how to appropriately handle situation such as informing an anxious patient of later discharge dates in a way that would decrease the chances of an intense crises.
The North Carolina State Board of Education outlines the professional standards to which teaches should uphold within, and even outside of, the classroom. These standards are comprised of the commitment to the student, commitment to the school, and commitment to the profession. Also, the Code of Ethics includes the professional conduct which entails, honesty, the acknowledgement of the rights of others, keeping information confidential, and compliance of criminal laws (NC State Board of Education, 1998). Values, Rights, and Duties of Patient and Significant Persons It is Jared’s right to make the decision about whether to disclose his disease, based on the principle of autonomy. He has the right to be heard and the right to privacy and confidentiality. Additionally, Jared values his health and the relationships that he forms with his coworkers and wants to consider all aspects before making any decision. It is his duty to make sure that he takes care of himself and is not taking any risky behaviors that may lead to spreading the disease. The other employees of the restaurant also value their health and relationships and want to make sure that Jared feels welcome to his new position, while also having the duty to not discriminate.
Counselors must be aware of their ethical and legal obligations when providing counseling services, such as those related to crisis prevention and intervention. This knowledge can guide the counselor in making appropriate decisions to best assist the client. One of the principles ethical dilemma I will experience with a client as a Human Service Professional is respecting the client 's right to freedom. Meaning that the client is eventually in charge of making his decisions and finding solutions to their problems. No matter if we agree with the client decisions. We must respect and provide the client with guidance and help clients explore their options. We cannot allow our beliefs and personal biases to influence the client.
The beginning of the article discusses the ethical dilemmas during client support. It argues about two situations in which ethics needs to be considered. Some people argue that ethics is required in every case, while others disagree. However, the article says that value based decisions are needed in a social worker’s decision other than simply considering knowledge.

The code considers professional values that counselors should be aware of, but also ethical principles that guide practice (ACA, 2014).
For that reason, the counselor should refer to the code of ethics for additional support. The counselor should have ethical and legal considerations when using research in counseling it is for the protection of the client. It is important to know what the population the counselor will be working to see if the research will be effective if there will be any barriers for the client. While completing the values checklist, I learned many things about myself. The two main things that I have learned is that I am generally accepting of a client’s freedom to choose so long as the client is not placing others at harm, and I am judgmental of men who want to dominate women. After completing the checklist, I understand that as a counselor many times clients will come in with values that are vastly different from mine, and my job is not judge, but to understand. If the issues of the client appear to be too outlandish for me to overcome, I will seek supervision and reflect on why this client is challenging for me.
The counselor has an ethical responsibility to strive to reduce any harm caused to a client through a empathic
