Ethics Theories The American Counseling Association began its first set of ethical standards in the 1961. Today, school counselors look to the ASCA Codes of Ethics to give a sense of shared identity and values of counseling. The codes serve as an outline of guidelines for ethical behavior to assist counselors in making the best possible decision in an uncertain or compromising situations ( Jocelyn, page 4). Ethics in the 20th century is a certain skepticism reflected in this era’s thinking of what is right and wrong. There are three philosophical approaches to ethics, deontology, teleology, and virtue. When asking what constitutes a good life and how moral decisions are made. Virtue theory is interested in the quality of an individual’s moral decisions. The connection of virtuous and ethics is a part of Greek philosophy thinking that of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle (Jocelyn, page 17). According to Aristotle, virtue is a behavior that converts to a trait of a human beings character. However, according to another, Alasdair, a concept of practice to propose that virtue is from an involvement of numerous interactions and human actives that strive for excellence. Consequently, virtue is recognized the importance of school counselors work. School counselors have a qualifications and skills to address preK-12 students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development (ASCA). A school counselor are leaders and consultants who create educational access and success to their schools. ASCA ethic principles include, all students must be respected, treated with dignity and have access to a school counseling program that advocates for and affirms all students diverse population (ASCA) not limited to, ethic/ racial identity, nationality, age, social class, economic status, abilities/disabilities, language, immigration statue, sexual orientation, gender, gender indemnity, family type, religious, emancipated minors, ward of the state, homeless youth and incarcerated youth ( ASCA). Nevertheless, there are several important codes for each school counselor to obey by. Responsibilities to Student: The duties of a school counselors are to develop and maintain comprehensive, developmental, data driven programs that addresses the academic career, and personal social needs of all student (). A counselor must respect and accept all diverse cultural, values, and beliefs of students, and must not impose on their own values on students or student’s families.
