Through the introduction, “Point of Departure,” the author opens up his telling with that there are many God-seekers in every land. Whether one faith carrys or the parts share in counterpoint, the God-seekers’ voices are being lifted to the God of all life. In this introduction, Huston Smith explains what this book is about. He says that this book is “not a textbook in the history of religions.” (Smith, p.2)
Throughout time, war has plagued the earth with its devious nature and gruesome conflict. However, as humans seek to create a civilization ideal for living, complete with peace and order, they must first suffer through the perils of war. One of the bloodiest conflicts in American history was that of the Civil War, which as seen in Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, was not only very complicated in strategy, but also in motivation. Both sides, Confederate and Union, had their own reasons for fighting. The North fought for preservation of the entire nation while The South fought for preservation of themselves.
In the books “Ender’s Game” and “Unbroken” there are many themes, some being of games, others of survival and suffering. However one theme that can be found in both novels is that of the strong impact of war, both during and after it happens. In “Unbroken”, Louis Zamperini created a timeless story with his courage and will to survive through both his tribulations in war and throughout his everyday life. His story includes everything from a childhood full of mischief to an eventual trip to the Olympics.
The situations take place in the story are evidence for the theme. First, the theme

Plunder we took, and we enslaved the women / to make division equal shares to all” (Homer 152-154). War curses Odysseus’ crew to be arrogant and murderous, even though the crew could have been grateful and guest-like. They break the law of hospitality without batting an eye because the recent war made them feel they could kill whoever they wanted. People have a tendency to abuse power, and the power to take someone else’s life is one of the most easily abused. War curses mankind to be jealous and murderous, as proven by Odysseus and his crew.
This underlying theme significantly contributes to the overall storyline providing a unique characterization to each character, allowing the reader to really experience the character’s emotional development through the novel. The theme of love can be identified from the very beginning of the novel.
These themes are what make this book a book. It makes the characters act and talk the way they do. Some of these themes are horrible and shouldn’t exist but it teaches the readers life lessons and shows
While reading Everyday Use, written by Alice Walker, as a reader you come to find out when looking at the two sisters, Maggie and Dee they are as similar as black and white when referring to what they have in common, along with how they’re raised. Throughout the story, it shows the tension between the family and how Dee finds the way to be the center of attention. Also, how Dee’s overconfidence runs her relationship with her younger sister Maggie leading into the shame her family feels while around her. Finally, the different reasons the two sisters know about their heritage. The tension between the Narrator, portrayed by their mom, along with Dee and Maggie is noticeable throughout the story.
Tacitus uses the word oppidum to refer to the Ubii’s centre of power when he says that their capital was marked for destruction, ‘destinatum excidio Vbiorum oppidum’, demonstrating the point that the term can be applied to foreign/barbarian strongholds. This idea of barbarian/ tribal stronghold would seem to make sense given the way in which oppidum was used by Livy to show the Trojans building a new capital, which would have had to start as a tribal settlement before growing in population and grandeur to become a city. One gets the sense that the use of oppidum here is a deliberate attempt to distinguish what are the humble foundations for the idea of a city, but only Rome will be called an urbs. This can be compared to Virgil’s use of oppidum to speak of ancient strongholds (arces- citadels would seem to fit here) which existed before the Trojans arrived in Italia.
The function of these symbols in the story play a pivotal role in how the reader perceives the characters and also how the theme of knowledge influences the nature
Success in war was an honorable characteristic of Roman people, as is evident in The Aeneid. Peace as a result of violence is a significant part of Roman culture and is embodied in this epic. To me the best theme in the story is friendship. I believe that every person needs to show friendship to
