In Abigail Adams’ letter to her son, John Quincy Adams, she uses various rhetorical techniques to reassure him that he is capable of becoming a leader.

The most used appeals in Adams’ letter are ethos, the ethical appeal, and pathos, the emotional appeal. In only the second sentence of the letter, Abigail already throws in that her advice is, to John, “for your own benefit,” (5) later she speaks of, once again to John, “your knowledge,” (11) and finally, “your understanding,” (14).
