Reflection – 3: Discussion on the Ability of Money to Buy Happiness “Whoever said that money can't buy happiness, simply didn't know where to go shopping” This is a quote which became instantly famous and popular once produced by Bo Derek, an American film actress and model. The quote states that in order to be happy you just have to know the place to shop for. The point at issue is that money can buy every sort of happiness (Derek, 2016). Luke, David, and Abraham are three participating students from Australia, Brazil, and China. The first question investigates the students' views upon what exactly happiness means. Luke says that happiness is the joy of achieving anything. He presents a materialistic point of view. When you want to gain or own something and you succeed to do that, you become happy. Luke believes that money is the governing power of human society. No one can be happy without money. There are several materials and things that can cheer you up and make you happy when you feel low. But, in order to own these things you have to have money. This is the foremost principle in our society. But, you have to be careful while spending money. You can get deceived. Therefore, you have to carefully choose where to shop for these things so that you can gain happiness. David thinks that the notion that money can buy happiness is itself a deception. Money can only buy temporal happiness. Eternal and long-term happiness depends on the peace of mind. Abraham adds up to this point and states that if money could buy happiness, then only the rich persons were meant to be happy. No matter how much money you own, you can never be happy if you don't limit your expectations. You have to stabilize and settle your mind in order to be happy.
