Throughout the novel, the characters develop abnormal powers. Dylan starts to view things differently, he feels the need to help people around him even if it puts his life in danger. Additionally, he realizes that he became psychometric. For instance, when he touched the money of a man that was intoxicated, he immediately knew that the man was evil and that the man trapped someone in a basement. Dylan isn’t the only one that starts to develop powers; Shepherd discovers that he can teleport himself anywhere. He found out about his powers when he was in the bathroom and was in the stall number one but the door was locked so he teleported himself to stall number four and got out. Shepherd started to shake after he got out of the bathroom and said “Shep is scared” (Koontz 171). He must be confused and frightened by his discovery; he isn’t sure what happened to him. First the characters are driving away and trying to find a solution to their problem but suddenly Dylan becomes crazy. He changes direction and drives at ninety miles per hour to the house of the waitress he met when he ordered dinner earlier that night. He went there because he touched the pin that she gave him and felt the need to save her from her troubles. When he arrives at her house, he found that her teenage grandson was about to kill his brother and the waitress. He was able to save both of them but he was almost killed by the waitress’s teenage grandson. Another major event occurred when Dylan and Shepherd were in a restaurant; they both discovered their powers. Dylan is psychometric and Shepherd can teleport himself. Even if they were in hurry, they found the time to help an old man finds his long lost granddaughter.
