The main reason why they did was because, Lincoln wanted to end slavery, because he opposed it and thought it was wrong, but the South favored slavery and didn't want it to end. His original plan was to abduct Lincoln, he failed many times, but didn't give up (O’Reilly, Dugard 94). His new plan was to capture him while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre, but that also didn’t go as planned either, so when he had the chance, he took out his pistol and shot the president in the back of the head. After he shot Lincoln he took off while yelling, “Revenge for the South!”. John Wilkes Booth did managed to escape, making his manhunt “largest in the time period.”.
