T. Harry Williams does an amazing job describing the plans and actions taken by Lincoln in his role and Commander in Chief. He explains how Lincoln revolutionized the role of a president by closely working with his generals and helping plan and strategize what to do with the Union’s forces. One criticism I have about Williams’ writing is that he goes into such extensive detail about the planning, that it is easy to get lost in the text. He provides only two maps throughout the whole book so it became increasingly difficult for me to visualize what was going on without having to look up maps online

With all of the books written about President Lincoln, one might believe that there is nothing more to learn about this great man. However, Doris Kearns Goodwin wanted to show an unconventional analysis of Mr. Lincoln and how he used politics to his advantage. Three well educated men with similar backgrounds were compared alongside Abraham Lincoln who was considered to be much less educated and unqualified for the position. This trio of officials was astounded when Lincoln won the election. Over time and years of working together, the four of them had become friends and respected each other.

President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on the evening of April 14, 1865 at a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D. C. He was accompanied by his wife, Mary Lincoln, and Major Henry Rathbone and Miss Clara Harris, his future fiancee; the Lincoln’s were in a relatively good mood having ended the civil war. The four sat together in a private balcony box. The murderer, John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor of that play, hated Lincoln’s reforms. At around 10:00 pm, when the play was ending, Booth had walked past Major Henry Rathbone and shot Lincoln in the head. He then cut Rathbone’s arm and lept off to the stage, protecting himself and fleeing from the crime scene.
